Two Generations of Master Tanba* Pottery Tadashi Nishihata 西端正 & Haruna Nishihata 西端春奈 To celebrate this 100th show curated by Touching Stone Gallery, we are honored to present the masterworks of a father-daughter duo from a 7-generation potter family in Tanba, Japan. Tadashi Nishihata holds the record of winning the prestigious Chanoyu Zokei Ten (Modern Tea Forms) Grand Prizes, while his daughter Haruna holds the future of the family legacy. Tadashi Nishihata (b. 1948) comes from a background steeped in pottery tradition. His great great great grandfather Ichifusa was a master potter known for his figurative sake bottles in the late Edo period. Nishihata’s father, Sueharu (b. 1926), is a highly regarded potter who has exhibited extensively. Tadashi Nishihata carries on the family tradition to become one of the most respected Tanba potters of the current generation. Among Nishihata’s many contributions, two major achievements stand out. First, he invented his unique Hai-yu finish, a beautiful snow-white glaze with turquoise-colored highlights made from ashes of the rice plant and ashes from different types of wood. Second and even more important, he re-established the beautiful Akadobe-yu (red clay glaze), a distinctive finish used by Tanba potters in the early Edo period (1603 – 1867). The method for creating the latter finish was lost for almost four hundred years, until Nishihata successfully re-created it in 2001 after trying for over 30 years. He gained wide recognition not only for these accomplishments, but also for his generosity in sharing his hard-earned knowledge with all his peers. Nishihata was awarded the Grand Prize of the Chanoyu Zokei Ten Exhibition sponsored by the Tanabe Museum of Art three times, thus becoming the only artist who has ever been bestowed with this prestigious award three times and twice in consecutive years. Haruna is the youngest daughter among three siblings. She first learned pottery making from her father. Aiming to use clay as her medium to express her own artistic visions, she went to Kyoto to study Design in Seika University. After graduation, she returned to Tanba and started making pottery along side her elder brother Taibi. While Taibi’s work was modeled after the elder Nishihata’s, Haruna developed her own distinctive polychrome pottery that fully utilized her talents in sculpture and design. Her works recall some of the classic painted pottery popular in Tanba in the 19th century, yet show great originality, grace and sensitivity. In 2010, tragedy struck the Nishihata family. Their only son Taibi - the intended heir of the family - passed away unexpectedly. Nishihata was so devastated that he stopped showing in our gallery in the past three years. It is with great honor that we devote this special exhibition for Tadashi Nishihata and Haruna Nishihata. This joint exhibition is a tribute to the extraordinary artistry of these two artists; it is also our wish that this exhibition will serve to launch the career for Haruna to carry on the long tradition and legacy of this gifted family. *The region Tanba [Tan 丹(red), Ba 波(wave)] was named for a kind of red rice grown in ancient time which turned the area into a sea of red. The name is often written as Tamba. Tanba is used here to preserve the original meaning and pronunciation, following revised Hepburn Romanization.
