Fusako Akao 赤尾ふさこ : Memory of Time Touching Stone Gallery is privileged to introduce an exciting woman ceramic artist, Fusako Akao, whose conceptual sculptural work brings a unique perspective to contemporary Japanese ceramics.Fusako Akao (b. 1950) studied ceramic art in Gifu National University. After graduation, she sought further training with renowned contemporary ceramist Kiyoyuki Kato in Seto, who had a profound influence on her artistic philosophy and development. Traditionally, Japanese pottery is based largely on functional forms. By contrast, Akao emphasizes conceptual ideas and inspiration. One of her earliest work entitled Ruins won the Grand Prize in Asahi Ceramic Exhibition in 1987, setting a direction towards conceptual art for her productive career. Akao’s work is a tribute to nature rather than an imitation of its beauty. She wants to capture the fleeting inspiring moments of what she calls ‘instants of twinkles’ that she has experienced in nature. It is important for her to choose clay as her medium. She sees the natural world as a slice in time in eons of a changing process. She believes every component in nature - each soil particle, each drop of water - holds memories of its creation. Her task as an artist is to reveal the innate beauty in her medium, as she turns clay into works of art. Akao's style is powerful and dynamic. Her juxtaposing angles and surfaces are carved by intuition rather than design. She sculpts with swift, forceful faceting movements, as if to uncover hidden memories in the clay. She uses various traditional glazes - black and green Oribe, white ash - to transform her work into beautiful landscapes that evoke memories of jagged mountains, turquoise streams, or luminous ice crystals. In a field dominated by men, Akao never wavers from her vision, creating many original forms throughout her career. The current show, entitled Memory of Time, is the first time her works are shown in the U.S. The show features over twenty sculptural pieces, each a remembrance of an inspiring moment. It is only appropriate that this body of work is exhibited in a centuries-old adobe house in Santa Fe, itself full of memories, adding yet another layer in the long creative process. |
