Origin - Ceramic Sculptures by Jonathan Cross Touching Stone Gallery is privileged to introduce Jonathan Cross, a gifted young artist doing very exciting works destined to leave a lasting mark in contemporary American ceramics.
Cross started his career as a printmaker for Gemini
G.E.L., working with great artists like
Richard Serra, from whom he drew inspirations.
Interestingly, Cross found his true
calling in ceramic after he developed a
passion in cultivating exotic cacti. He began to create
one-of-a-kind clay containers to
complement the austere beauty of his plants. Soon, his
unique containers were collected
as works of art, and his passion blossomed into a new
career that has allowed him to fully
explore his rare gift in 3-dimensional design and
sculpture.
There is power in the raw simplicity in Cross’ ceramic sculptures. Using minimalist forms with direct, forceful and purposeful lines, he sculpts clay into powerful sculptures with such visual impact that they seem to command as much attention as large monuments. He turns artistic concepts into elegant forms using a wide variety of techniques, including wood- and salt-firing, sand blasting, polishing, and painting. Most important, much of these techniques become largely invisible in the final products, as his works remain uncluttered and natural. Cross is presently working on his MFA in Arizona State University at Tempe. The current exhibition - his first major exhibition in Santa Fe - features an impressive body of work that showcases the distinctive vision and artistry of this up-and-coming ceramic artist.
